Unit/Topic: Can we dig it? How can I keep my seedlings alive? Lesson # 5
ELA Year Level: P Focus: Active Learning Processes: Problem Solving:- Engaging in Problem Solving |
Lesson Objectives:
(5 domains)
Children will be able to reflect on their learning and build a ‘greenhouse’ for their seedlings from the farm visit. They will need to identify the problems, generate solutions with classmates and adult, try solutions and generate alternatives. To do this they will drawn on their knowledge of seedlings and greenhouses and demonstrate their understanding by designing and building a safe place for their seeds to germinate and grow. Students will work together as a team and draw on their happy memories from the farm trip.

Hello Song
Recount: What did we learn about seeds with Farmer Jim? What do they need to grow? What equipment would we need? Can we build a safe environment in the classroom for our seedlings to grow?
I have these items: Piece of shade cloth Bucket Small watering mister Trays Plastic liners Pots of soil and seeds from farm visit
Let’s design a greenhouse together: Draw basic outline of desk beside window that is to be the ‘greenhouse’ Get children to come up one at a time and add their item to the design by pointing to where they would like to place it. Rest of class agrees or suggests another place. Democratic design!

Does our greenhouse look like the design? What did we change? Why did we change it? Why do you think our seedlings will survive there? Get children to respond to photos of themselves taken during activity centre time.
Make a concept map on projector.

Assessment
|
Collect evidence of learning for portfolios: Record design process of greenhouse with anecdotal records of problems generated, solutions posed, collaboration with classmates and alternative suggestions. Take a photo of greenhouse design on board, and the completed project. List students input to the project. Record their feelings of workmanship and teamwork. |
